Birch Bluff
Birch Bluff is an eighteen-acre legacy estate along John’s Creek in Craig County, Virginia, designed for the Owner of local General Contractor ‘Cornerstone Builders.’ It exemplifies the builder’s original training as a cabinet maker.
A gravel path leads from a sunlit field to the cabin sited among the trees. The stone chimney is the heart of the Great Room, Terrace and Kitchen. A reclaimed tobacco-stave railing along the east-west Galley above leads on one side to the Master Bedroom. Its large arched window reflects the path of the creek below, framing each sunrise over ‘Birch Bluff.’ The sun sets in the opposite Guest Room bay window between double built-in queen bunk alcoves.
Environmental sustainability joined tradition; proportional and axial relationships order building elements and expand the modest, welcoming cabin to views. Selection and detailing of quality materials, systems and the high performance building envelope ensure that this will be a homestead for generations.
