Linwood Holton Elementary Rain Garden Ribbon Cutting
Balzer and Associates, Inc. was instrumental in the design collaborative that created an outdoor classroom and learning gardens for Linwood Holton Elementary School located in Richmond, VA. The outdoor classroom resembles a butterfly with a roof designed to collect rain water. The gardens include raised vegetable beds, a garden shed with green roof, clad walls with hand crafted custom designed tiles, an orchard, a butterfly garden and much more.
Recently completed at Linwood Holton Elementary School is a large rain garden located in the center island of the school’s front parking lot. The installation of the project was funded and managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, its many partners and donors. The Bay Foundation selected this site to meet water quality improvement goals in the local water shed and to give site specific practical examples of how current and upcoming Virginia state storm water regulations can be met. Balzer and Associates provided the construction plans and landscape design for the rain garden. Former Virginia Governor Linwood Holton, whom the school was named after was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. To read the full story click here.
