Big Lick Junction and Community High School

Big Lick Junction and Community High School is an adaptive re-use project in Roanoke, Virginia. Located at an existing major crossroads and named for the former name of the city, the building was originally used as a warehouse and grocery store. Consisting of approximately 25,000 sf of finished space, the building was converted into a multi-use facility with a private school for the arts on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. Working in conjunction with the developer, Hist:Re Partners, Balzer and Associates, Inc. developed a plan that included classrooms, administrative space, gallery space and a 120 seat performance space for the school, and sixteen rental apartments with stunning views of downtown Roanoke and Mill Mountain. This project included historic renovation tax credits as part of the funding mechanism, with Balzer and Associates, Inc. providing the necessary design documents for architectural, structural and civil design for application for tax credits, permitting and construction.
