New Associates and Vice Presidents Named

(February 3, 2022) – Balzer and Associates is proud to announce several new leadership appointments. David Lisowski, LA and Emily Salkind, LPSS, PWD have been named as Associates. Benjamin Crew, LA and Daniel Hansen, LS are our newest Vice Presidents. They are each dedicated to the growth and future development of the firm, have achieved professional status, and exhibited leadership skills. 

New Associates

David Lisowski, LA, LEED AP graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Horticulture and a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture both from North Carolina State University. He is one of Balzer Associates’ most experienced landscape architects and works in the Richmond office. David is responsible for the planning and design of commercial and residential land development projects throughout Virginia and his experience includes urban adaptive re-use, office/retail, healthcare, residential subdivisions, and single-family lot plans. David is highly skilled in site engineering design and understands the critical role that landscape architecture plays in the local beauty, development, protection, and preservation of a site. He is a Board Member of the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. David joined Balzer and Associates in 2002.

Emily Salkind, LPSS, PWD graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Virginia Tech. She is an Environmental Project Manager in Balzer and Associates’ Richmond office. Emily is involved in the planning and execution of field assignments including wetland delineations, stream assessments, resource protection area designations, and site feasibility assessments. She is also responsible for the data collection and reporting associated with these assignments for the purpose of environmental permitting and compliance for both residential and commercial development. Emily is an active member of the Virginia Association of Professional Soil Scientists and the Virginia Association of Wetland Professionals. Emily joined Balzer and Associates in 2015.

New Vice Presidents

Ben Crew, LA leads the Balzer and Associates Roanoke engineering department. He has been at the firm for 17 years as a registered landscape architect. Ben graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. Ben is responsible for land development projects including feasibility/due diligence, master planning, conceptual design, and construction documents to final project management/construction administration. His local knowledge and experience with a wide range of commercial, industrial, and residential projects make him a trusted resource. His dedication to serving the community as a board member of the Blue Ridge New Generations Rotary Club complements his leadership skills with Ben’s emphasis on creating value for clients and managing challenging projects for success.

Daniel Hansen, LS is the head of the Shenandoah Valley survey department has been working for Balzer and Associates for the last 16 years. Daniel graduated from Radford University with a Bachelor of Sciences in Physics. His work experience ranges from small-scale, single-family residential surveys to large-scale, several hundred-acre boundary surveys. Daniel’s depth of experience in the Shenandoah Valley has led to a deep knowledge of the area.
