Balzer and Associates wins Judges 1st Place and People’s Choice at Gingerbread House Challenge
RICHMOND, VA. (November 14, 2019) – For the third consecutive year, Balzer and Associates’ Richmond office kicked into holiday gear for the annual Gingerbread House Challenge with the Better Housing Coalition. Leading up to the competition, the Balzer team dedicated their own time and resources to the design and construction of a gingerbread display, which included creating design drawings, making custom mechanical and edible display pieces, and outfitting the display with electricity and sound.
In keeping with the theme ‘Holiday Songs’, the Balzer team went with a classic, bringing The Nutcracker to life with an edible version of The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The team’s display consisted of a detailed gingerbread music box and a standalone nutcracker. The gingerbread box and lid featured sugar pearls and intricate white icing inlays around the exterior. The interior of the box featured a gingerbread stage with fondant curtains, a sparkling night sky fondant backdrop, and a laser cut gingerbread ballet dancer fixed to a custom low-speed motor. Fitting of their team name Deck the Balz, the display was decorated with dozens of homemade cake pops, which was a signature feature to represent sugar plums.
The Balzer team won the Judges 1st Place overall, as well as won the People’s Choice award for the second consecutive year. Once again, Balzer and Associates is proud to have participated in this event and is excited to see the proceeds go to the Better Housing Coalition. With the funds raised, BHC can further support Richmond residents in need with higher-quality, affordable housing.
